On March 5, 2003, a suicide bomber from Hebron detonated a bomb hidden underneath his clothes on no.37 bus carrying many children and teenagers on their way home from school. The bus exploded on Moriah Boulevard, near the neighborhood of Carmeliya in Haifa. Seventeen people were killed and 53 were wounded.
The Memorial for the 17 victims was planned exactly on the spot the attack occured. With the consent of the property owners the retaining wall of the adjacent garden was torn down and rebuilt in such a way as to create a space for contemplation and laying wreaths . The site is used as an official commemoration place for foreign visitors.
